Forced Labor Ring Busted in Hudson County

A Hudson County woman has been convicted of forcing a Sri Lankan woman into labor for over nine years, announced Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband and U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito.

Alia Imad Faleh Al Hunaity, 43, was found guilty on all counts of the indictment against her following a six-day trial in Camden federal court. The jury deliberated for two hours before returning the guilty verdict.

According to documents filed in this case, Hunaity brought the victim to the United States on a temporary visa in 2009 to perform domestic work. She caused the victim to overstay her visa and remain in the country illegally for over nine years.

Hunaity forced the victim to cook, clean, and care for her three children without pay. She also limited the victim’s interactions with the outside world and required her to sleep in a public space, including the kitchen. In 2018, Hunaity forced the victim to marry her so that the victim could obtain legal residence and she could continue to force her to work without fear of deportation.

The forced labor charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for September 4.

The case was investigated by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, Newark Division, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, in conjunction with the Anti-Trafficking Coordination Team initiative of the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Labor.
