SAN DIEGO – In a shocking turn of events, Lydiana Castro, a 31-year-old woman from Calexico, California, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for her role in an alien smuggling operation that went horribly wrong last year. On March 23, 2016, Castro was driving a group of undocumented aliens near the US-Mexico border when she spotted US Border Patrol agents and sped away, leading to a deadly crash that killed two of her passengers and left three others severely injured.

According to court documents, Castro pleaded guilty in July 2016 to charges of transportation of certain aliens and aiding and abetting. The defendants’ vehicle fishtailed and careened down an embankment, striking a semi-truck on Interstate 8. The impact was catastrophic, leaving one man hanging face down through the rear window and four others in varying states of medical distress. Two of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the others were rushed to a trauma hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

One of the survivors was left brain dead and was transported back to Mexico on life support at the family’s request. Another passenger suffered permanent paralysis, while the third continues to live with the challenges of his injuries. Castro’s decision to flee from Border Patrol agents ultimately led to the devastating consequences of the crash.
