Alleged Destructive Device Left at Nederland Police Station

David Michael Ansberry, a 64-year-old man originally from California, has been charged with using and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction after allegedly leaving a destructive device at the Nederland Police Department in Colorado.

According to the indictment, on October 11, 2016, Ansberry, also known as Jessie Howard, used and attempted to use a destructive device against a person and property within the United States without lawful authority.

The indictment alleges that if convicted, Ansberry faces any term of years or life in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine.

Ansberry was arrested in Chicago and has not yet been transported to Colorado, therefore, an initial court date in Denver has not yet been set.

The case was investigated by the FBI, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Nederland Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Substantial assistance was provided by the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.

Ansberry is being prosecuted by Colorado Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Holloway and Trial Attorney Mara Kohn with the Counter Terrorism Section of the National Security Division.

The charges contained in the Indictment are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
