Medford, Ore. – In a federal courtroom, U.S. District Judge Michael McShane handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Allen Donn Richins, 53, of Trail, Oregon, for his role in possessing firearms and methamphetamine.
The charges stem from an investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas W. Fong prosecuted the case.
On August 9, 2012, deputies responded to a reported accidental shooting on Richins’ rural property in Trail. Upon arrival, they found his car in the driveway, the front door open, and a handgun holster and taser on the entryway floor. Deputies conducted a safety sweep of the house, discovering two handguns and drug paraphernalia. A search warrant was obtained, and they eventually seized 11 ounces of methamphetamine, scales, packaging materials, $5,500 in cash, five handguns, and three rifles, including a semi-automatic assault rifle with several loaded high-capacity magazines.
Richins apparently fled the area when the deputies arrived. Two weeks later, they tracked him to a house in Grants Pass, where he was surrounded by the Grants Pass Police and eventually surrendered. Richins admitted to selling methamphetamine and trading it for firearms.
Richins has a lengthy history of crime, with six prior burglary convictions, as well as convictions for possession of methamphetamine in 2011 and 2006, unauthorized use of a vehicle in 1992 and 1989, supplying contraband in 1994, four counts of first-degree forgery from 1988 and 1989, and felon in possession of a firearm and theft in 1998. He was previously convicted of felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to 15 years in prison as an Armed Career Criminal in 1993.
The 15-year sentence was handed down on February 18, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Michael McShane. The case was investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The charges against Richins include felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The sentence will see Richins serve 15 years in federal prison.
