Allen Tereal Grimes, Illegal Ammunition Possession, Florida 2024

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, FL – Allen Tereal Grimes, 33, is looking at a substantial stretch in federal prison after admitting he illegally possessed ammunition despite a lengthy rap sheet that already includes multiple felony convictions. Grimes pleaded guilty this week, potentially facing up to 15 years behind bars for the offense.

According to court documents, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) – Jacksonville Office, caught Grimes with Winchester 9mm ammunition, among other rounds, on August 11, 2023. This wasn’t a first offense for Grimes; far from it. He already had seven prior felony convictions stacked against him.

The list of Grimes’ previous crimes reads like a career criminal’s playbook: battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, fleeing and eluding a police officer, felony battery, and even assault with intent to commit a felony. Federal law clearly prohibits individuals with such a record from possessing any ammunition.

Grimes made his initial appearance in federal court on March 4, 2024, and was immediately detained. The ammunition itself is now subject to forfeiture, allegedly connected to the underlying crimes that led to his initial convictions. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled, leaving the length of his potential prison stay uncertain, but prosecutors are pushing for the maximum.

U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg of the Middle District of Florida is prosecuting the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein leading the charge. The case is being highlighted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence by coordinating law enforcement efforts at all levels.

PSN, recently bolstered by the Department of Justice, focuses on building trust with communities, supporting violence prevention groups, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and tracking results. While the program’s effectiveness is often debated, this case serves as a stark reminder that repeat offenders with violent histories will be targeted, and illegal gun possession will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
