A Houston, Texas, man, Alton Himes, age 25, has been sentenced to 19 months in federal prison for his role in a brazen ATM larceny scheme in Madison, South Dakota. According to court documents, Himes and his co-defendants used a stolen truck and towing equipment to physically break into the ATM and remove cash boxes, fleeing the scene with over $32,300 in stolen cash.
The ATM, belonging to Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, was destroyed in the process, costing over $30,000 to replace. Himes was ordered to pay approximately $100,000 in restitution, in addition to a $100 statutorily required special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Himes pleaded guilty to Bank Larceny on March 1, 2023, after being indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2022. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on May 15, 2023, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
According to investigators, on December 2, 2021, Himes and his co-defendants approached the ATM and used the stolen truck and towing equipment to break in and remove the cash boxes. The stolen truck was taken from a parking lot on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota.
Himes’s co-defendants, Kytorrion Young, Keivon Jones, and Kendrick Kennedy, will be awaiting sentencing for their role in the crime. The case was investigated by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri prosecuting the case.
Himes was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving his sentence. The total amount of cash stolen was $32,300, and it belonged to Dakotaland Federal Credit Union.
