Johnstown, Pa. – In a gritty federal court sentence, Darrin Canaan, 37, of Altoona, was handed a 96-month prison term and four years’ supervised release for his involvement in a heroin conspiracy. United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the severe penalty after Canaan was convicted of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute a substantial quantity of heroin between January 22, 2015, and April 17, 2015.
Canaan’s conviction was the result of an extensive investigation led by the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Cambria County Drug Task Force, Altoona Police Department, and Cambria County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song commended the agencies involved for their tireless efforts in bringing Canaan to justice. ‘The sentence handed down today sends a strong message that those who deal in dangerous drugs will face serious consequences,’ Ms. Song stated.
The court documents presented during the trial indicated Canaan’s role in the heroin distribution network, which posed a significant threat to the community. The sentencing judge emphasized the gravity of Canaan’s actions and the potential harm his activities could have caused to innocent individuals.
Upon completion of his prison term, Canaan will be under supervised release for four years, ensuring that he does not return to criminal activity. This sentence is a stark reminder of the Federal government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking in all its forms.
