Alvaro Gomez-Lopez, Illegally Reentering the United States, Iowa 2024

A Postville man has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

Alvaro Gomez-Lopez, a 35-year-old citizen of Guatemala, received the prison term on August 13, 2024, after pleading guilty to one count of illegal reentry into the United States after having been deported.

Gomez-Lopez admitted to previously being deported from the United States in March 2006 and illegally reentering the country without permission. Immigration officials discovered his presence in the US after he was arrested on state charges in Allamakee County in April 2024.

At the guilty plea, Gomez-Lopez provided an alias name and date of birth when he was booked into the jail, but immigration officials were able to determine his identity through fingerprints.

Gomez-Lopez was previously convicted in Allamakee County in 2022 under the same alias name for interference with official acts.

Gomez-Lopez was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. He was sentenced to 104 days imprisonment and a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
