Hartford Man Pleads Guilty to Illegal Gun Possession

Alvin Crawford, 34, of Hartford, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in a New Haven federal court.

Crawford’s guilty plea comes after a 2018 incident where he was apprehended by Hartford Police in the area of Rockville Street in Hartford. According to court documents, Crawford was seen exiting a car and running from police, tossing a yellow plastic bag over a fence and continuing to flee.

Police eventually caught up to Crawford on Westland Street, where they found the Taurus .38 Special revolver and five rounds of ammunition in the bag. Crawford’s history of state felony convictions, including criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit, make it a federal offense for him to possess a firearm.

The case is being investigated by the Hartford Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes members of the Hartford Police Department, East Hartford Police Department, Connecticut State Police and Connecticut Department of Correction.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian P. Leaming as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.

Crawford has been detained since his arrest and faces a maximum 10-year sentence, with sentencing scheduled for March 7, 2019.

The guilty plea marks a significant blow to those involved in illegal gun activity in Hartford, and serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that come with violating federal laws.
