Protected Health Info Thief Gets 2.5 Years in Prison

Amanda Lowry, a 40-year-old Sherman woman, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for violating federal laws related to protected health information.

Lowry pleaded guilty on December 4, 2020, to conspiracy to obtain information from a protected computer, a federal crime, in the Eastern District of Texas. U.S. District Judge Sean D. Jordan handed down the sentence on [no date given].

According to the indictment, Lowry, along with Demetrius Cervantes and Lydia Henslee, conspired to steal protected health information and personally identifiable information from a healthcare provider’s electronic health record system. They then sold the stolen information to durable medical equipment providers and contractors, netting over $1.4 million in proceeds.

The defendants used the stolen funds to purchase luxury items such as SUVs, off-road vehicles, and jet skis. This reckless behavior will cost Lowry her freedom for the next 2.5 years.

“Today’s sentence is another example of the Eastern District’s commitment to vigorously defending protected health information and prosecuting those who exploit such information for their personal gain,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
