Ami Yezri, Hate Crime, Threats to Jewish Community Institutions, Florida 2017

BODY:
In a chilling case of hate-fueled terror, Ami Yezri, a U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been arraigned in Orlando on a slew of charges stemming from a wave of bomb threats made against Jewish Community Centers in Florida. According to the indictment, Yezri, 38, made multiple calls in early 2017 to preschool programs operated at these facilities, threatening to blow them up and unleash active shooters.

The threats, which were made in the dead of night, sent shockwaves through the community, forcing the temporary closure and evacuation of several centers. Emergency personnel were scrambled to respond to the threats, but no explosives were ever found. Yezri’s actions, however, left a trail of fear and anxiety in their wake.

Yezri’s extradition from Norway, where he had been detained at the request of the U.S., marked a significant milestone in the investigation. The 38-year-old had previously served time in Israel for related conduct. If convicted, Yezri faces up to 20 years in prison on hate crime charges, 10 years on bomb threats charges, and five years on interstate threats charges.

The case was a collaborative effort between the FBI’s Tampa, Washington, and Atlanta Field Offices, as well as the Justice Department’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section. The indictment, however, is just an allegation, and Yezri is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Yezri’s actions were a brazen attempt to intimidate and terrorize a vulnerable community. The question now is whether justice will be served, and Yezri will be held accountable for his crimes.
