A 30-year-old Fairfax man, Amrit Jaswant Singh Chahal, was arrested today in a sweeping federal crackdown on a multi-year Ponzi scheme that bilked dozens of investors out of at least hundreds of thousands of dollars. The scheme, operated through The Kane Capital Investment Group, LLC, allegedly used new investor funds to pay fictitious returns to earlier victims while hiding massive financial losses.
According to the criminal complaint unsealed in Alexandria, Chahal falsely claimed Kane Capital generated annual returns of 28 to 34 percent. In reality, he suffered substantial losses managing the money and fabricated brokerage statements to mask the truth. Investors were fed a web of lies as Chahal kept the illusion of profitability alive, all while funneling cash into accounts under his control.
The deception ran deep: Chahal opened a bank account in an investor’s name without their consent and siphoned off funds for personal spending. Prosecutors allege this wasn’t just mismanagement—it was a calculated fraud designed to enrich Chahal at the expense of trusting clients who believed their money was being wisely invested.
Chahal now faces federal wire fraud charges, each carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. While actual sentences are typically lower, the case will be weighed under the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors when a federal district court judge determines the final outcome. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Burke and Jamar K. Walker, under the authority of Tracy Doherty-McCormick, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Andrew W. Vale confirmed the agency’s role in the investigation, highlighting the coordinated effort to dismantle financial fraud operations in the region.
Victims or individuals who believe they may have been targeted in the scheme are urged to contact the Eastern District of Virginia Victim/Witness Coordinators at 1-800-221-6538. Court documents, including the criminal complaint, are available through the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia or via PACER using Case No. 1:18-MJ-70. This case underscores the long reach of federal fraud enforcement—and the high cost of financial deception.
