CHICAGO – Andrei Taylor, 27, of Chicago, is headed to federal prison for fifteen years after admitting to illegally possessing a handgun linked to a brutal Labor Day weekend murder in 2022. The conviction isn’t just about the gun; authorities say Taylor was an active participant in the premeditated killing of Kadaivion Jones.
The bust went down on September 19, 2022, in Chicago’s Tri-Taylor neighborhood. Taylor was riding dirty in a Kia Optima that had been snatched in a carjacking just hours earlier. When a Chicago Police squad car attempted a stop, Taylor and three others bolted from the vehicle. In a desperate attempt to ditch evidence, Taylor tossed a loaded handgun – complete with an extended magazine – into a nearby backyard before being apprehended.
But the gun wasn’t just about an illegal possession charge. Investigators quickly connected the weapon to the September 2, 2022, murder of Kadaivion Jones, who was gunned down while standing on a sidewalk in West Garfield Park. U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp, Jr. found that Taylor “participated culpably” in the premeditated killing, solidifying the severity of the sentence.
Taylor, already a three-time convicted felon for firearm-related offenses in Cook County, wasn’t legally allowed to have a gun in the first place. The case was a joint effort between the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Chicago Police Department, spearheaded by Acting U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual and CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elie Zenner and Simar Khera secured the conviction and the harsh sentence. The prosecution highlighted this case as a prime example of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a federal initiative aimed at tackling violent crime through coordinated law enforcement efforts. The program focuses on holding firearm offenders accountable through federal prosecution, a tactic increasingly deployed in the Northern District of Illinois.
While fifteen years won’t bring Kadaivion Jones back, authorities hope this conviction sends a clear message: illegally possessing firearms and participating in violent crime in Chicago will be met with the full force of federal law. The streets of Chicago have seen enough bloodshed, and federal agencies are determined to stem the tide, one conviction at a time.
