Assault and Weapon Possession Charges Hit USP Canaan Inmates

SCRANTON – A federal indictment has charged two inmates at the United States Penitentiary Canaan in Waymart, Pennsylvania with assault and possession of a weapon in prison.

Andrew Daniels, age 40, and Dontrace Blaine, age 34, are accused of attacking another inmate with a sharp object and a combination lock wrapped in a bedsheet on November 8, 2020.

The matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant United States Attorney James Buchanan is prosecuting the case.

According to Acting United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, the indictment alleges that Daniels and Blaine committed the crimes while housed at the USP Canaan.

Indictments are only allegations. All persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The maximum penalty under federal law for these offenses is ten years imprisonment.
