Andrews Gets 11 Years for Prison Drug Pipeline

BIRMINGHAM, Ala – Adam Demond Andrews, 35, of Birmingham, will spend the next eleven years in federal prison after being sentenced for his role in a brazen conspiracy to flood the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility with drugs. U.S. District Court Judge Madeline H. Haikala handed down the 132-month sentence on Friday, a consequence of Andrews’ February 2024 guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances – specifically methamphetamine and heroin.

The bust originated on March 20, 2022, when Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) officers caught four individuals trespassing on Donaldson property. The suspects scattered, abandoning a cache of contraband that proved far more dangerous than simple rule-breaking. ADOC officers recovered a staggering 1406.1 grams of methamphetamine and 60.71 grams of a heroin mixture – alongside cocaine, fentanyl, and THC. But the haul didn’t stop there.

Beyond the hard drugs, the dropped bags contained a disturbing array of prohibited items: a pistol with ammunition and an extended magazine, pocketknives, pepper spray, prescription medication (including drugs used to treat opioid use disorder, adding a layer of grim irony), marijuana, THC gummies, multiple cell phones and accessories, scales, and even luxury items like shoes, jewelry, and watches. The intent was clear: to arm and empower inmates, and to profit from the chaos.

ADOC officers quickly apprehended Andrews near the prison entrance later that same day. The investigation quickly revealed that this wasn’t an isolated incident. Andrews, according to court documents, was a repeat offender, consistently smuggling contraband into various ADOC facilities. This case, however, is tied to a larger, ongoing federal investigation into widespread fraud and corruption within Donaldson Correctional Facility itself. U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in Charge Steven L. Hofer announced the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought Andrews to justice. The DEA led the investigation, with crucial assistance from the U.S. Secret Service and ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Edward J. Canter and John M. Hundscheid were responsible for the prosecution.

The sentence serves as a stark warning: attempts to compromise the security of correctional facilities – and to profit from the misery of others – will be met with the full force of federal law. The flow of drugs into prisons doesn’t just endanger inmates and staff; it fuels violence, undermines rehabilitation efforts, and breeds a culture of corruption that permeates the entire system. Andrews’ 132-month sentence is a small step towards stemming that tide.
