PHILADELPHIA, PA – A wave of terror gripped parts of Philadelphia last November as two young men embarked on a brazen 12-day crime spree, culminating in seven armed robberies and a violent carjacking. Angel Fayez, 19, and Kevin Antun, a.k.a. Acquah Evans, 20, both of Philadelphia, have now pleaded guilty to federal charges, admitting to their roles in the terrifying series of incidents.
The duo’s rampage began on November 22, 2022, with the carjacking of a woman at the Liberty gas station on Kensington Avenue. Barely hours later, they escalated their activity, robbing a Dollar General and a Popeyes restaurant – the first of multiple fast-food establishments targeted during their spree. They reportedly made off with approximately $3,613 in total stolen goods. The indictment details a pattern of escalating violence and disregard for both property and human safety.
According to court documents, the pair didn’t slow down. On November 28th, they hit a Texas Chicken and Burger on Kensington Avenue. Then, on November 30th, they doubled down, robbing two Wingstop locations – one on Aramingo Avenue and another on Cottman Avenue – in the same day. They finished the night with a robbery at a Domino’s Pizza on Oxford Ave. Their final documented crime occurred on December 3rd, when they robbed another Popeyes, this time on Aramingo Ave.
“Fayez and Antun terrorized the community with their brazen gunpoint crimes, at times committing multiple armed robberies in the same day,” stated U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. The sentiment echoes the fear felt by business owners and residents in the Kensington and Lower Northeast sections of the city during the height of the crime wave. Law enforcement officials emphasize that taking repeat offenders like these off the street is a critical step in combating violent crime.
Eric DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Philadelphia Field Office, highlighted the danger posed by Fayez and Antun, stating they showed “a complete disregard for public safety after carjacking an innocent woman and threatening multiple store employees with firearms.” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel echoed this concern, emphasizing the real risk to community members. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Philadelphia Police Department, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Both defendants have pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking, eight counts of Hobbs Act robbery, and one count of carrying and using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence. Angel Fayez is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29, 2024, before the Honorable Juan R. Sanchez. Kevin Antun, a.k.a. Acquah Evans, will be sentenced on May 30, 2024, also before Judge Sanchez. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime and improving community safety.
