Angel Isaula, a 67-year-old Honduran national, has been sentenced to time served in federal court in Portland for being found in the United States after removal.
On January 7, 2020, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a van in Turner, Maine, where Isaula was a passenger. He told the agents that he was in the U.S. illegally, after having been removed on two prior occasions. Immigration records showed that he had been removed from the U.S. in September 2013 and again in June 2014.
The U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case and found that Isaula had been removed from the U.S. on multiple occasions before being caught again. The court records indicate that Isaula had no previous convictions in the U.S.
Following his plea, U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby sentenced Isaula to time served, which is approximately three months. Isaula’s sentence is the culmination of a joint investigation between the U.S. Border Patrol and federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank announced the sentencing, stating that Isaula’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws. Frank emphasized that the U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to enforcing these laws and holding accountable those who choose to disregard them.
Isaula’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of re-entering the U.S. after removal. The U.S. government takes a firm stance on immigration violations, and those who are caught will face severe penalties.
The sentencing of Angel Isaula is a significant victory for U.S. law enforcement and a warning to those who would attempt to circumvent the law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
