The former postmaster of the Gates Mills Post Office was caught red-handed in a brazen theft scheme that left the U.S. Postal Service out $57,000. Ann Apana, 66, of Maple Heights, Ohio, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for her crimes, a move that comes after a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

Between June 12, 2009 and June 15, 2014, Apana stole approximately $38,741.42 in money and merchandise from the Postal Service. Additionally, she made around $18,341.08 in unauthorized purchases of postage using customers’ credit card information.

The charges against Apana stem from her conviction on one count of theft of property used by the U.S. Postal Service.

U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach weighed in on the case, stating that the vast majority of Postal Service employees are hardworking and dedicated individuals who deserve the public’s trust.

However, in Apana’s case, that trust was broken, and she was found guilty of stealing from her employer and customers.

The investigation into Apana’s activities was led by special agents with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Miranda E. Dugi.

Apana’s crimes have consequences, both for her and the U.S. Postal Service. The service has made it clear that it will not tolerate theft from its employees or customers.

Apana, a resident of Maple Heights, Ohio, received her sentence on an unspecified date.

The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General worked diligently to identify Apana and bring her to justice. The message is clear: if you steal from the Postal Service, you will face the music.
