McAllen, Texas resident Anna Ramirez-Ambriz, 57, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for her role in a Medicaid scam that netted her over $3 million in fraudulent claims.
Ramirez-Ambriz, owner of Compassionate Medical Supply in Edinburg, pleaded guilty to health care fraud on March 31, 2017, after a lengthy investigation by the Texas Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, FBI, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Office of Inspector General.
The scheme, which ran from 2007 to 2013, involved Ramirez-Ambriz billing Texas Medicaid for higher quantities and more costly incontinence supplies than were actually delivered to over 100 Texas Medicaid recipients. Employees at Compassionate Medical Supply were instructed to provide recipients with fewer and less expensive incontinence supplies than what was billed to Texas Medicaid.
As a result of her scheme, Ramirez-Ambriz admitted to submitting false and fraudulent claims to Texas Medicaid, causing the program to suffer a loss of $3,143,149.41.
Ramirez-Ambriz was permitted to remain on bond and will voluntarily surrender to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility at a later date.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew Swartz and Michael Day.
With her sentence, Ramirez-Ambriz will be required to pay over $3 million in restitution to the Texas Medicaid Program.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the integrity of Medicaid and ensuring that those who seek to defraud the system are held accountable.
