Anthony Bobtail Bear Sentenced for Domestic Assault
Grimy Times has learned that Anthony Bobtail Bear, 34, was sentenced for two counts of Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender in South Dakota.
According to court documents, Bear was sentenced to 60 months of custody and 3 years of supervised release for an incident that occurred on December 3, 2013. He also received 77 months of custody and 3 years of supervised release for an incident that took place on February 26, 2014. The sentences and supervised releases are to be served concurrently, as per the court’s order.
On April 22, 2014, Bear pled guilty to both charges. The convictions stem from two separate incidents that left two female victims with severe injuries. In the first incident, Bear was accused of jerking the victim’s arm, punching her in the stomach, and throwing her on the bed. The second incident saw Bear pushing a victim to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the edge of a coffee table, and hitting her several times with an open hand on the left side of the face.
At the time of these incidents, Bear had four final judgments of conviction in Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court for offenses that would have been considered crimes against a spouse or intimate partner if subject to federal jurisdiction.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the cases. Bear was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Bear is also required to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
Brendan V. Johnson, United States Attorney, announced the sentencing of Anthony Bobtail Bear, Jr. U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann presided over the case.
