JACKSON, MS – A brazen daylight carjacking landed 21-year-old Anthony Lee Holder of Jackson a hefty 72-month federal prison sentence, authorities announced Tuesday. Holder held up a victim at gunpoint on February 7, 2021, relieving them of their vehicle in a violent takeover on Jackson streets.
The case, spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Jackson Police Department, quickly zeroed in on Holder as the perpetrator. Details of the carjacking, revealed in court documents, paint a picture of a calculated act of aggression. The victim was reportedly approached by Holder, who then brandished a firearm and demanded the keys to the vehicle.
Holder ultimately pleaded guilty to the armed carjacking charge on August 29, 2022, foregoing a trial and accepting responsibility for his actions. U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca for the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn jointly announced the sentencing, signaling a commitment to tackling violent crime in the region.
“This sentence sends a clear message that armed carjacking will not be tolerated,” a source within the U.S. Attorney’s office stated, speaking on background. “We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring violent offenders to justice and ensure the safety of our communities.” The investigation focused heavily on forensic evidence linking Holder to the scene of the crime.
Assistant United States Attorney Jessica S. Terrill skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting compelling evidence that led to Holder’s conviction and subsequent sentencing. The prosecution highlighted the fear and trauma inflicted upon the victim, arguing for a significant punishment to deter similar crimes.
The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaborative efforts between law enforcement and local communities. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in May 2021, emphasizing community trust, violence prevention programs, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. This sentencing is being touted by officials as a direct outcome of those efforts, a small victory in a larger fight against rising violence.
