Anthony One Star Jr., a 32-year-old from Rosebud, South Dakota, is behind bars after admitting he threatened to hunt down and kill a law enforcement officer off duty. The man, also known as Tony One Star and Sonny One Star, was sentenced on August 10, 2020, by Chief U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange to 26 months in federal prison.
The threat came during transport to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Adult Correctional Facility following an arrest for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. On December 15, 2019, officers responded to the Two Strike Community after reports of a man walking in the roadway. When they arrived, they found One Star dressed in all black, stumbling through traffic. After taking him into custody, he made the chilling declaration: “I’m a cop killer. I’m going to find you and kill you when you’re off duty.”
The comment triggered an immediate federal investigation. Though the officer was affiliated with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, the threat constituted a federal crime under statutes protecting federal officials and federally funded law enforcement personnel. One Star was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 22, 2020, and later pled guilty on May 19, 2020, without contest.
As part of his sentence, One Star will serve 26 months in federal prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson, emphasized the gravity of threats against officers, particularly those made with apparent intent and specificity.
The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, whose cooperation with federal authorities ensured swift action. U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons stated that threats against law enforcement—whether on or off duty—will be met with full force of the federal justice system. “No officer should fear for their life after doing their job,” Parsons said in a statement.
Following sentencing, One Star was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. With no indication of appeal, he begins his term in the federal prison system, a stark consequence for words spoken in anger but carrying deadly weight.
