San Pedro Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening U.S. Congresswoman
LOS ANGELES – A San Pedro man accused of leaving a threatening voicemail for U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) pleaded guilty to a federal felony charge.
Anthony Scott Lloyd, 45, entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson, who scheduled a sentencing hearing for July 16. Lloyd faces a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison at the time of sentencing.
The threatening message was left on Oct. 22, 2017, at Waters’ office in Washington, D.C. Lloyd used expletives and epithets in the message, which included the words dead and kill a total of four times.
According to the plea agreement, Lloyd admitted to leaving the message with the intent to impede, intimidate, interfere with, and retaliate against Waters while she was performing her official duties.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which received assistance from the U.S. Capitol Police Threat Assessment Section.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jake Nare is prosecuting the case, which is part of the General Crimes Section.
The plea agreement is a significant development in the case, which has been under investigation since the threatening message was left in 2017.
