Anthony Smallwood, Fentanyl Trafficking, Massachusetts 2019

BOSTON – A Boston man’s brazen fentanyl trade came crashing down yesterday as he was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in distributing the deadly opioid.

Anthony Smallwood, 30, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns for his involvement in four separate fentanyl sales to a cooperating witness in the spring of 2019.

According to court records, Smallwood pleaded guilty in January 2020 to four counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl.

The sales, which took place between March and May 2019, resulted in over 230 grams of fentanyl being sold to the cooperating witness.

Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell praised the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, which was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. ‘This case is a prime example of the federal, state, and local agencies working together to disrupt and dismantle the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten our communities,’ Mendell said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen W. Hassink of Mendell’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit prosecuted the case.

The OCDETF Program is a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States. Additional information about the program can be found at https://www.justice.gov/OCDETF.
