Anthony Tyrone Jones, Impersonation, Wire Fraud, Failure to Appear, Florida 2016

FBI Impersonator Sentenced to Prison

A notorious FBI impersonator has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after perpetrating a string of heinous crimes. Anthony Tyrone Jones, 36, of Jacksonville, Florida, was handed a five-year and six-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard. In addition to his prison term, Jones was ordered to pay $21,700 in restitution to a victim of his offenses.

Jones’s troubles began in February 2011, when he defrauded a victim out of $21,700. The unsuspecting individual had provided Jones with the funds to invest in the stock market, but instead of investing the money, Jones used it for his own personal enjoyment.

The FBI impersonator’s next victim was a woman who had agreed to have sex with him in exchange for payment. However, Jones had earlier posed as an FBI agent to induce the woman into having sex with him at no charge. This egregious act of deception led to Jones’s arrest on January 9, 2013.

However, Jones managed to evade capture and removed his electronic monitoring bracelet on April 23, 2013. He went on the run, remaining a fugitive until his capture on August 13, 2015, by the U.S. Marshals Service in Jacksonville.

Jones pleaded guilty to his crimes on February 29, 2016. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant United States Attorney Kelly S. Karase prosecuted the case.

Jones’s sentence serves as a reminder that impersonating law enforcement officials and engaging in wire fraud and failure to appear are serious crimes that will be met with severe punishment. The people of Jacksonville can rest easier knowing that Jones will be behind bars for the next five years and six months.
