A string of brazen armed robberies shook Miami-Dade County in April and May 2016, but thanks to the tireless efforts of law enforcement, one of the perpetrators has finally been brought to justice.
Humberto Herrera, a 43-year-old resident of Homestead, Florida, pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to committing four counts of Hobbs Act robbery and one count of possessing, using, and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The spree of commercial armed robberies took place between April 28 and May 3, 2016, with Herrera targeting a Little Caesar’s restaurant, Advance Auto Parts, a RaceTrac gas station, and Kohl’s Department Store. On each of these dates, Herrera entered the business, brandished a firearm, and threatened a store employee.
According to the superseding indictment, Herrera took United States currency from Little Caesar’s, Advance Auto Parts, and RaceTrac, while making off with approximately $33,000 worth of jewelry from Kohl’s. Herrera faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment for each robbery and a minimum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment as to the firearm count.
Benny G. Greenberg, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, praised the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Homestead Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan K. Osborne and J. Mackenzie Duane.
Herrera is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Kathleen M. Williams on July 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. The sentence will undoubtedly serve as a reminder to would-be perpetrators that armed robbery will not be tolerated in Miami-Dade County.
