Newark federal court saw a significant blow to a local drug trafficking operation as Antonio Bivens, a/k/a ‘Mo,’ 44, of Irvington, New Jersey, was sentenced to 108 months in prison for his role in a massive crack-cocaine distribution scheme.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Bivens was a key member of a drug trafficking organization led by Kenneth Hammond, a/k/a ‘Saleem,’ 49, also of Irvington. Bivens distributed multiple kilograms of crack-cocaine and powder cocaine from two residences owned by Hammond in Irvington.
In November 2015, law enforcement officers conducted a raid on the residences, seizing approximately two kilograms of crack-cocaine and 12 kilograms of powder cocaine. Bivens’ guilty plea on the superseding information, charging him with one count of conspiracy to distribute 280 grams or more of crack-cocaine, was a crucial step in bringing this case to a close.
U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden imposed the sentence in Newark federal court, also ordering Bivens to serve four years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
This case is a clear example of the ongoing efforts by federal law enforcement agencies to combat the scourge of illegal narcotics in our communities. Special agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Carl J. Kotowski, were credited with the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Barry A. Kamar and Elaine K. Lou of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark represented the government in this case. Defense counsel, Brian Neary Esq., of Hackensack, New Jersey, represented Bivens.
In related news, Hammond, the leader of the drug trafficking organization, was previously sentenced to 108 months in prison for his role in the conspiracy on June 21, 2017.
