In a chilling verdict, Kandace Sitting Eagle, 33, of Arapahoe, Wyoming, was convicted by a federal jury on June 13 for aggravated child abuse, assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and assault with a dangerous weapon. The trial, which spanned four days, concluded before U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson in Cheyenne.
According to court records, an Arapahoe school resource officer discovered the tragic plight of a 13-year-old student who had not attended school for over a month. On December 12, 2023, the officer found the child hiding in a crawl space under the trailer, where Kandace and her husband, Truman Sitting Eagle, were concealing them. The severity of the child’s injuries required immediate hospitalization at Sage West Hospital in Riverton and subsequent transport to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The investigation revealed that the child had endured weeks of relentless physical abuse, isolation, starvation, and psychological torment at the hands of Kandace and Truman. Sentencing for Kandace Sitting Eagle is scheduled for August 29, with a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years up to life imprisonment, a fine not exceeding $250,000, and up to five years of supervised release.
Truman Sitting Eagle, 36, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury on April 8. His sentencing is scheduled for August 6 before the same judge. Truman also faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years up to life imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to five years of supervised release.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into this heinous crime, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook handling the prosecution. Case No. 24-CR-03 will be determined by the federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
