Drug Trafficking Ring Cracked: Arizona Man Sentenced to 27 Months in Prison
Rochester, NY – In a major blow to organized crime, Raul Eduardo Rivera de la Torre, 25, of Tucson, Arizona, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for his role in a large-scale marijuana trafficking conspiracy.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., the conspiracy, which began in March 2007 and continued through April 2010, involved the shipment of hundreds of pounds of marijuana from Tucson, Arizona, to various locations in the Northeast, including Cleveland, Ohio, Port Chester, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, New York.
De la Torre, who is from Mexico and attended high school in the U.S., played a key role in the conspiracy, serving as a translator between the suppliers, who spoke Spanish, and the members of the conspiracy purchasing the marijuana and shipping it to the Northeast, who spoke English.
Government witnesses testified that de la Torre assisted in the translation process, allowing the conspiracy to function smoothly. One witness detailed how he purchased marijuana from a Mexican supplier and was assisted by de la Torre’s translations. The witness also testified that he used various companies to ship marijuana packaged in boxes to various locations in Rochester.
Another witness testified that he was responsible for receiving the shipments of marijuana in Rochester and distributing the marijuana once it arrived. The investigation, led by Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of James J. Hunt, Special Agent in Charge, New York Division, resulted in de la Torre’s sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Moynihan, who handled the case, stated, ‘The sentencing is a significant victory in our ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and disrupt the flow of illicit substances into our communities.’
The sentencing marks the culmination of a long and complex investigation, and serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of engaging in large-scale drug trafficking.
Rivera de la Torre’s sentence is a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement officials in combating organized crime and keeping our communities safe.
