Michael Recker, a 47-year-old man from Arlington, Iowa, has been sentenced to more than three and one-half years in federal prison for his involvement in a sophisticated scheme involving false grain elevator tickets and bankruptcy fraud.
The former grain elevator ticket fabricator was convicted of conspiring to create eight fake tickets, which Recker used to bilk the grain elevator out of over $20,000. His deceitful actions were uncovered when he attempted to sell a combine for $50,000 before filing for bankruptcy, failing to disclose the proceeds in court documents.
In addition to his prison sentence, Recker was ordered to pay $26,267.24 in restitution to the grain company and serve a 3-year term of supervised release post-prison. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids.
Recker’s downfall was partly due to the diligent work of the North Iowa Bankruptcy Fraud Task Force, which includes the U.S. Attorney’s Office, IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and FBI. Assistant United States Attorney C.J. Williams prosecuted the case, while various federal agencies investigated it.
