Armed Bank Bandit Sentenced to Life Plus 25 Years
Fort Myers, FL – In a harsh blow to the streets of Southwest Florida, U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber handed down a life sentence to convicted armed bank robber Grant Elmore Davis, Jr. (71, Mansfield, OH) for his brazen crime.
On October 31, 2023, Davis walked into a bank in Fort Myers and opened fire, making verbal commands to the teller to hand over cash from the register. The teller, shaken but unharmed, complied, and Davis made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
Davis’s rap sheet is a laundry list of crimes, including a previous conviction for armed bank robbery and using a short-barreled shotgun in relation to a crime of violence in November 2001. This time around, he faced charges of armed bank robbery, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.
The court also ordered Davis to forfeit the firearm and ammunition used in the offense, a 9mm handgun, which was recovered by law enforcement.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan leading the prosecution.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The program brings together law enforcement and community organizations to foster trust, support prevention efforts, and set strategic enforcement priorities.
With this sentence, the people of Fort Myers can rest a little easier knowing that a cold-blooded killer is behind bars for his crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
