Donald Williams, Armed Burglary, District of Columbia 2016

A former Gallaudet University employee has been sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison for armed burglary. Donald Williams, 26, of Washington, D.C., was found guilty of breaking into the university’s kitchen at gunpoint and forcing employees to hand over money from a safe.

According to police, Williams entered the kitchen on October 22, 2016, and pointed a gun at two female employees, who are deaf. He forced one of them into a storage room and the other into a back office space where a safe was kept. Williams struck one of the victims on the head with the gun, causing a laceration.

Williams also pointed a gun at a third employee and ordered her to open the safe. After she handed over the money, he fled the scene. The victims were able to identify Williams as the perpetrator due to his distinctive build, skin complexion, and mannerisms.

Police investigated the crime and recovered surveillance video footage, cell phone video, and a black mask with Williams’s DNA on it. He was arrested on December 20, 2016, and pleaded guilty in January 2017.

U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the Forensic Biology Unit of the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences. Williams will be placed on three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.

The case highlights the importance of community involvement and cooperation in solving crimes. The victims’ ability to identify Williams as the perpetrator was crucial in bringing him to justice.
