A brazen armed home invasion in Northeast Washington, D.C. has landed a 21-year-old man a 28-year prison sentence.
Gregory Gantt, 21, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the October 2013 home invasion, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Vincent H. Cohen, Jr.
Gantt was one of several individuals who, wearing ski masks, carried out the crimes at about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2013, in the 5700 block of Blaine Street NE. The group followed the victim into his home and held him, his fiancé, and his mother at gunpoint for approximately 40 minutes while they ransacked the home and stole various items, including cash, electronics, and the fiancé’s engagement ring.
After ransacking the home, the assailants left in two vehicles that belonged to the victims and deposited the proceeds from the burglary inside a vacant home on Raleigh Street SE. To avoid leaving fingerprints behind, they set the vehicles on fire in a field adjacent to an elementary school on Alabama Avenue SE.
Members of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) tracked the defendants to the Raleigh Street home using data from a GPS tracking device Gantt was wearing as part of his supervised release in an unrelated robbery case. Gantt and the other defendants were arrested in or near the residence, and most of the proceeds of the burglary, along with several ski masks, were recovered.
Two others, Andre Townsend and Darnell Mason, are serving prison terms for their roles in the various crimes. A third defendant, Shareem Hall, is awaiting sentencing.
Acting U.S. Attorney Cohen praised the work of the detectives and officers who investigated the case for the Metropolitan Police Department and acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
