Two men were sentenced for their roles in the November 2017 armed robbery of the Phillips 66 Speedy Mart in Spearfish, South Dakota.
David Jackson Jr., 25, of Sturgis, South Dakota, pleaded guilty to Use and Brandishing of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence on August 9, 2018. He was sentenced on November 30, 2018, to 7 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Jackson’s accomplice, Adam Peters, 22, of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, pleaded guilty to Interference with Commerce by Robbery and Use and Brandishing of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime of Violence. He was sentenced on December 17, 2018, to 10 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as well as restitution in an amount to be determined.
The armed robbery was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Spearfish Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime in communities across the country. Launched in 2017, PSN brings together law enforcement agencies and local communities to develop effective strategies to combat violent crime.
Following their sentencing, Jackson and Peters were immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement partnerships and community involvement in keeping neighborhoods safe.
U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced the sentencing, stating that the defendants’ actions had a significant impact on the community. ‘These sentences demonstrate our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable for their crimes,’ he said.
