Charles Colhoff, Armed Robbery, South Dakota 2015

Charles Colhoff, a 28-year-old from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for the armed robbery of two women in June 2015. Using a firearm to intimidate and steal personal belongings, Colhoff carried out the violent crime alongside an accomplice, leaving victims shaken and the community on edge.

On November 8, 2016, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court handed down a 7-year prison sentence to Colhoff, whose aliases include Charles H. Goings and Chuckie Colhoff. Following his release, Colhoff will serve 3 years of supervised probation and must pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Colhoff pleaded guilty on July 22, 2016, to charges of Robbery and Use and Brandishing of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime of Violence. The charges stem from the June 4, 2015, incident in Pine Ridge where he and another individual confronted two women, produced a firearm, and forcibly took their possessions.

The investigation was led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, working alongside the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Their coordinated effort pieced together evidence that led to Colhoff’s arrest and conviction, underscoring the challenges of law enforcement in tribal jurisdictions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case, emphasizing the danger posed by the use of firearms in violent crimes. “Robbery with a gun isn’t just theft—it’s terror,” Kelderman said in a prior statement. “These actions have lasting consequences on victims and public safety.”

Colhoff was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service immediately following sentencing. The case stands as a stark reminder of the violent crime plaguing parts of Indian Country and the federal government’s push to hold perpetrators accountable.
