Defendants Charged with Armed Robbery of Tobruk Food Market

Two Milwaukee men have been federally indicted for their roles in an armed robbery at the Tobruk Food Market in Milwaukee, WI, on June 25, 2013.

According to the indictment, Artemus Taylor, 21, and Joshua Childress, 20, allegedly robbed the market at 4401 West Lisbon Avenue in Milwaukee, WI, while armed with a firearm.

The Hobbs Act, passed by Congress in 1946, provides federal jurisdiction for cases involving violent, habitual criminals who commit armed robbery of businesses involved in interstate commerce.

U.S. Attorney James L. Santelle announced the indictment, which charges the defendants with one count of interference with commerce by robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison on the armed robbery count and a minimum mandatory sentence of 7 years and up to life in prison on the charge of use of a firearm during a robbery.

The investigation into the armed robbery is being led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Milwaukee Police Department, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office.

The public is cautioned that an indictment is merely a charge, and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Margaret B. Honrath.
