Arthur Lee Campbell, III, a 55-year-old from Mount Hope, Ohio, has pleaded guilty to stealing $144,700 from a Montgomery Masons Chapter in Montgomery, Alabama, authorities announced.
According to court documents, Campbell was serving as Secretary for the Royal Arch Masons Chapter #22 of the State of Alabama and was authorized to handle the financial affairs of the Chapter. However, he began stealing the funds, making two cash withdrawals that totaled around $8,684 and depositing two checks written from the Chapter’s account into his own personal bank account that together totaled $136,000.
Evidence also indicated that Campbell used the stolen money to pay personal expenses and obligations associated with his gambling activities, officials said.
Campbell, who was residing in Autauga County, Alabama, at the time of the charge, faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and restitution to the victim, authorities announced.
The maximum punishment for this charge is 10 years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, and restitution to the victim. Sentencing is scheduled for February 17, 2017.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, and it is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Robert Randolph Neeley and Curtis Ivy, Jr.
Campbell’s actions resulted in a significant financial loss for the Montgomery Chapter #22 of the Royal Arch Masons of the State of Alabama, officials said.
This case is a reminder that financial crimes can have serious consequences and that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable, authorities announced.
