Ashanti Washington, 23, Charged with Perjury in New York Federal Trial
Ashanti Washington, a 23-year-old woman from the Bronx, New York, has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with a federal trial in March 2025. Washington, also known as ‘Shani Boni,’ is accused of lying under oath during the trial of Kevin Perez, who was charged with racketeering and violent crimes.
The trial, United States v. Kevin Perez, 23 Cr. 99 (LJL), took place in the Southern District of New York, with Perez facing charges of racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, attempted murder in aid of racketeering, and possession, use, brandish, and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to the attempted murder in aid of racketeering.
Washington testified on March 17 and 18, 2025, as a witness for the defense, but allegedly lied under oath on multiple occasions. According to the indictment, Washington falsely testified that she did not know about or touch the gun used in the charged murder, denied knowledge of a particular gang hand sign and a gang member’s membership in that gang, and claimed that the victim in the charged murder had verbally threatened her and Perez before Perez shot and killed the victim.
However, subsequent investigation revealed that Washington’s DNA was found on multiple parts of the gun used in the charged murder, contradicting her testimony. Washington’s false testimony allegedly obstructed justice and undermined the integrity of the legal system.
Washington, also known as ‘Shani Boni,’ was arrested on June 24, 2025, and presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara C. Moses. She is charged with three counts of perjury at a federal criminal trial, each carrying a maximum term of five years in prison, and one count of obstruction of justice, which carries a maximum term of 10 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton praised the work of the Special Agents from the HSI Violent Gangs Task Force of the NYPD and stated that the investigation is ongoing. The case is being handled by U.S. District Judge George B. Daniels. Perez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison, with sentencing currently scheduled for July 16, 2025.
