A 24-year-old Asheboro man has been sentenced to 151 months in prison for leading deputies on a deadly high-speed chase through Randolph and Chatham Counties.
Adam Michael Clodfelder, 24, of Asheboro, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, a violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(C), announced United States Attorney Sandra J. Hairston of the Middle District of North Carolina.
The high-speed chase began on September 3, 2023, when a deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office spotted Clodfelder on a motorcycle approaching Highway 220 in Randolph County. The deputy noticed that Clodfelder turned off his headlights and accelerated quickly away.
Clodfelder, who had no license plate, recklessly switched lanes and reached speeds of over 150 miles per hour, prompting the deputy to pursue him for over 75 miles. The chase ended when Clodfelder lost control of the vehicle, and he was found to be in possession of a firearm, methamphetamine, a lock pick, and drug paraphernalia.
At the time of the incident, Clodfelder had previously been convicted of a crime with a term of imprisonment exceeding one year, rendering him ineligible to possess a firearm. Clodfelder’s prior conviction also made his actions even more egregious.
Clodfelder was sentenced to a 151-month term of imprisonment by the Honorable William L. Osteen, Jr., United States District Judge in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, to be followed by a 3-year term of supervised release. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, and the Asheboro Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Mary Ann Courtney.
