Christopher Lamont Holmes, Heroin-Meth Trafficking, North Carolina 2018

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eight defendants are behind bars following a federal takedown of a heroin and methamphetamine trafficking ring that flooded Mecklenburg County with deadly drugs for years. A 33-count indictment, unsealed on February 23, 2018, charges the group with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute large quantities of narcotics. The arrests came after a coordinated early-morning sweep, capping a 10-month investigation led by federal authorities.

The defendants, operating from at least 2015, are accused of running a tightly organized drug network that distributed meth and heroin across Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas. Named in the indictment are: Christopher Lamont Holmes, 36, of Charlotte; Lakia Renee Williams, 35, of Charlotte; Antonio Lamont Williams, 41, of Indian Trail; James Edward Green, 45, of Charlotte; Lakita Monique Battle, 38, of Charlotte; Michael Demontre Daniels, 32, of Charlotte; Devaris Lavon Robinson, 30, of Charlotte; and Quanetha Renay Battle, 34, of Charlotte. All face federal drug conspiracy charges, with some accused of additional counts including possession with intent to distribute.

U.S. Attorney R. Andrew Murray called the arrests a major blow to the Western District’s narcotics trade. “This conspiracy pumped dangerous drugs into our neighborhoods for years,” Murray said. “These charges are the result of relentless work by federal and local agencies determined to dismantle networks that profit from addiction and despair.”

John Strong, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina, emphasized the human cost of drug trafficking. “Drug dealers victimize our communities, strain law enforcement, and destroy lives,” Strong said. “The FBI will not stop until we break the deadly cycle of abuse fed by these criminal enterprises.”

IRS Criminal Investigation played a pivotal role by following the money trail, enabling authorities to financially cripple the operation. “We disrupt drug rings by cutting off their cash flow,” said Matthew D. Line, Acting Special Agent in Charge for IRS-CI. “This case proves that financial investigation is just as critical as street-level enforcement.”

Local leaders hailed the takedown as a model of interagency cooperation. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney stressed the toll these drugs take: “They are destroying families. We must do everything we can to combat these deadly drugs and the many crimes they bring with them.” Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey added, “Every drug dealer taken off the street is potentially saving someone’s life.”
