Ashley Nichole Lies, Gun Purchase Deception, Iowa 2021

A 26-year-old Waterloo woman has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for buying a gun for her boyfriend, a man prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior domestic abuse conviction.

Ashley Nichole Lies, of Waterloo, Iowa, was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day imprisonment on April 12, 2021 by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.

Lies made a false statement during the purchase of a 9mm pistol in July 2020, claiming she was buying the gun for herself when in fact she was purchasing it for her boyfriend.

The gun was seized from her boyfriend a few weeks after the purchase, and investigators determined that Lies also attempted to buy at least one other gun for her boyfriend and a friend, but was denied.

Lies was also ordered to serve a three-year term of supervised release after her prison term, and must pay a $100 special assessment fund.

The case was investigated by the Cedar Falls Police Department, the Waterloo Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).

PSN is a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
