Felipe Martin, a 26-year-old resident of Sioux City, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.
On April 27, 2023, Martin entered a guilty plea in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand presiding. The evidence presented at the plea hearing showed that on August 29, 2022, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop in Lemars, Iowa, after noting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle Martin was driving.
During the search of the vehicle, a Glock 9mm Luger, a .45 ACP pistol, ammunition, and a marijuana roach were found. A subsequent search warrant at Martin’s residence uncovered drug paraphernalia, baggies, cocaine, and marijuana.
Martin admitted to being an unlawful user of marijuana and cocaine, which, under federal law, prohibits a person from possessing any firearm or ammunition.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
Martin faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and not more than three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. Sentencing will be scheduled after a presentence report is prepared.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood and investigated by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, Le Mars Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
