Ashokkumar Patel Sentenced to 139 Days for Unlawful Re-Entry, St. Croix VI, 2023
Ashokkumar Patel, a 40-year-old Indian national, was sentenced to 139 days in prison for unlawfully re-entering the United States. Patel was convicted of re-entry of a removed alien, a serious crime that carries significant penalties.
According to court documents, Patel attempted to board a Spirit Airlines flight from the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, on November 24, 2021. During inspection, it was revealed that Patel presented a fraudulent Florida driver’s license. Further investigation showed that Patel was previously apprehended and detained by Customs and Border Patrol in Tecate, California, on August 17, 2019.
Patel was subsequently removed from the United States and departed for India on November 21, 2019. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations worked together to investigate the case, while Assistant United States Attorney Daniel H. Huston prosecuted the matter.
The sentence handed down by District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis includes 139 days of incarceration, followed by one year of supervised release, and a special assessment of $100. This sentence demonstrates the seriousness with which the U.S. government views crimes related to immigration and national security.
Ashokkumar Patel’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of attempting to re-enter the United States after being removed. This crime not only poses a threat to national security but also undermines the integrity of the immigration system.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of the Virgin Islands has demonstrated its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting the interests of the American people.
Ashokkumar Patel’s sentence will be served in a federal prison, where he will be subject to the rules and regulations of the facility. Upon release, he will be required to comply with the terms of his supervised release, including regular check-ins with his probation officer.
