Assault Charges Land Couple Behind Bars
Toni Harmon, a/k/a Toni Bad Horse, age 39, and her accomplice, Sterling St. Cloud, age 33, have been sentenced for their roles in assaulting a federal officer and aiding and abetting in Lower Brule, South Dakota.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on or about March 8, 2014, when a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer responded to a call regarding an alleged assault. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with St. Cloud, Harmon, and others. The officer began to place St. Cloud into custody for an outstanding tribal warrant, but St. Cloud attempted to run away, sparking a struggle with the officer.
Harmon intervened, grabbing the officer’s hand, and St. Cloud was able to break free with her assistance. The couple then fled the house through the door Harmon had opened.
Harmon, a/k/a Toni Bad Horse, pleaded guilty on September 23, 2014, while St. Cloud entered her guilty plea on October 9, 2014. The pair was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 13, 2014.
U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentences. Harmon and St. Cloud were each sentenced to time served, approximately 8 months, in addition to 2 years of supervised release. They were also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying that those who assault federal officers will be held accountable for their actions.
