Pine Ridge Man Sentenced for Assault
A Pine Ridge man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for his role in two separate incidents of assault.
Lee Larney, also known as ‘Southern Wind’, was sentenced on March 14, 2014, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, for his crimes.
Larney was found guilty of Assault on a Federal Officer and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He was sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release for Assault on a Federal Officer, and 30 months of imprisonment consecutive and 3 years of supervised release concurrent for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
Larney was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims for each offense.
The investigations into Larney’s crimes were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. The cases were handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins.
Larney was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The incidents of assault took place in August 2012 at Oglala and in April 2012 at Porcupine. In the first incident, Larney struck an Oglala Sioux Tribe police officer in the face while the officer was arresting him for intoxication. In the second incident, Larney struck a man repeatedly in the face, causing a broken jaw which resulted in surgery.
Larney’s sentencing marks the end of a long and complex case that involved the investigation and prosecution of two separate incidents of assault. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and the need for strong law enforcement to protect our communities.
