Felony Firearms: Frankie Darrell Durant, 50, of Athens, Texas, has been locked away for his own firearm’s folly. Sentenced to a 57-month federal prison term by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis, Durant pleaded guilty on January 8, 2013, to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The crime was discovered when three firearms were unearthed from a storage room in Smith County, Texas, rented by Durant. The July 26, 2011, find set off an investigation that led to the revelation that Durant had been previously convicted of possession of a controlled substance, making him a prohibited possessor under federal law.
With his new sentence, Durant’s criminal tally now includes the crime of being a felon with a firearm. Indicted by a federal grand jury on September 12, 2012, Durant’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, which seeks to reduce gun violence and improve safety in the Eastern District of Texas.
The investigation was conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby prosecuted the case, demonstrating the commitment to justice and community safety.
Frankie Durant’s prison term serves as a stark reminder that the laws against firearms possession for felons are not just words on paper. They are enforced, and those who break them will face serious consequences.
