Atkins Brothers Gun Store Heist Lands 1st Brother Behind Bars

Pittsburgh, PA – A brazen attempt to steal guns from two federal firearm licensees landed Jerwahn Atkins, 24, behind bars for 18 months.

According to court records, on May 31, 2020, Atkins, along with his brothers Jamir and Jerquay, conspired to steal firearms from Allegheny Arms and Gun Works, a federal firearm licensee located in Pittsburgh. The thieves used a crowbar to try and gain entry to the store, triggering a burglary alarm that sent them running.

The trio’s attempts to steal guns continued at the National Armory in Moon Township, another federal firearm licensee. Once again, they used a crowbar to pry open the door, triggering a burglary alarm and sending them fleeing.

Before imposing the sentence, Judge W. Scott Hardy denied Atkins’ request for a downward variance. Instead, he ordered Atkins to serve 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and pay $2,000 in restitution.

Atkins’ sentencing marked the beginning of the end for the Atkins brothers, who will face sentencing in the coming months. Jerquay Atkins is scheduled to be sentenced on August 25, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., while Jamir Atkins will face sentencing on September 2, 2021, at 10:00 a.m.

The investigation that led to the prosecution of the Atkins brothers was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna is handling the case on behalf of the government.

Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based on the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant. The law provides for a total sentence of not more than five years imprisonment, a term of supervised release not more than three years, and/or a $250,000 fine.
