Indianapolis Attorney Jailed for $4.5 Million Scheme

An Indianapolis attorney has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for defrauding his clients of more than $4.5 million over a decade.

Chief U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young handed down the sentence to William F. Conour, who was ordered to pay over $6.7 million in restitution to his victims.

Conour’s downfall began when he entered an open guilty plea on July 15, 2013, and was subsequently placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his bond was revoked on June 27, 2013.

The government had accused Conour of dissipating assets without prior consent, breaching the conditions of his bond.

Conour’s law practice was focused on representing clients who had suffered serious injuries or death caused by construction site accidents, automobile collisions, and traumatic brain injuries.

However, instead of depositing the full amount of client settlements into trust accounts, Conour kept a majority of the funds for his own use and benefit.

Conour’s scheme continued from 1999 to April 2012, during which time he used newly obtained settlement funds to pay off old settlements and debts.

The case was prosecuted by the Central District of Illinois, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana recused due to conflict of interest.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Indiana State Police, conducted the investigation.

U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis and FBI Special Agent Robert A. Jones announced the sentence on behalf of the government.
