ATWATER, CA — A chilling threat to a federal prosecutor’s family has resulted in serious charges for Stanislav Yelizarov, 35, an inmate at the United States Penitentiary, Atwater. The grim revelation comes from U.S. Attorney Eric Grant, who announced that a federal grand jury indicted Yelizarov for making threats against the life of a federal official’s family.
According to court documents, Yelizarov has been no stranger to the legal system. He was previously convicted in the District of Maryland and is currently undergoing further proceedings there and in the Fourth Circuit. His target in this most recent incident was an Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted him earlier.
The alleged offense took place on March 23, 2024, when Yelizarov used a recorded prison telephone line to threaten the assistant U.S. attorney, declaring his intent to kill the prosecutor’s “whole family.” This chilling revelation comes after Yelizarov had previously sent threatening letters to the same prosecutor.
The investigation into this case was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with support from the U.S. Marshals Service. The Eastern District of California’s U.S. Attorney’s Office received assistance from counterparts in the District of Maryland and the Eastern District of Virginia. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Veneman-Hughes is handling the prosecution.
In a severe escalation, Yelizarov now faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. However, any sentence would be subject to the court’s discretion following an assessment of applicable factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. As always, Yelizarov is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
