Avedale Johnson, Endangering Children, New Mexico 2024

Avedale Johnson

Avedale Johnson, a 40-year-old Arizona woman and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has pleaded guilty to endangering three young children after a high-speed, alcohol-fueled crash on U.S. Highway 491 in New Mexico.

According to court records, Johnson drove intoxicated at speeds over 100 mph with the three unbelted children under 12 in her car, crashed into another vehicle, and fled from law enforcement on May 4, 2024.

Fortunately, the three unbelted children were unharmed during the incident. Johnson later admitted to drinking vodka before the crash.

Judge has taken the plea, and Johnson will be subject to up to three years in prison and five years of supervised probation. Johnson pleaded guilty to abandonment or abuse of a child (no death or great bodily harm).

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office made the announcement today. The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations, investigated this case.

Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin L. Dillon is prosecuting the case. Johnson’s actions put the lives of three innocent children at risk, and she will now face the consequences of her reckless behavior.

This case serves as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of prioritizing the safety of our children. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
